(June 9th, 2023 - Edmonton, AB) - In his newest release, Simple Math, JJ Miller returns to his melancholic writing style, offering an experimental ballad tinged with psychedelic soundscapes. Listen to Simple Math here.
Spurred on by a series of sleepless nights, Miller wrote Simple Math to depict the way a person’s mind magnifies their anxieties in the night.
As he elaborates, “For a period of weeks, I would wake up to contemplate the same set of existential problems, almost like a recurring dream. I wanted to portray that uncomfortable, sleepless place where a person’s problems feel the heaviest.” While Simple Math is a natural extension of his writing style, it’s also his most experimental track to date.
“As a songwriter,” Miller explains, “I admire music that departs from convention in subtle ways, but still offers something accessible to the listener. That’s what I wanted to do here – create something that’s equally experimental and accessible.”
Pairing understated vocals and lush strings with the unrelenting momentum of synthesized bass, the song derives its dream-like qualities from bands like Radiohead and Keane. Simple Math will arrive on all major streaming platforms on June 9th, 2023.

In JJ Miller’s newest release, Charlemagne, he departs from his melancholic writing style to offer a hook-laden rock song with lyrical depth.
Spurred on by the political turbulence of the 2020s, Miller penned Charlemagne to tell the tale of a power-drunk king who blends religion with politics to expand his empire. As Miller elaborates, “Charlemagne is a metaphor for humanity’s recurring struggle with political leaders who use religion in their pursuit of power.”
While Charlemagne is a natural extension of his writing style, it’s also his liveliest song to date. “As a drummer,” Miller explains, “I’ve always loved making people dance; and as a listener, I’ve always loved the melodies and harmonies of British pop music. I wanted to bring those things together.” Combining his understated vocals and danceable drumming with the lush harmonies of British pop music, the song derives its anthemic qualities from bands like Keane and Death Cab for Cutie.
Charlemagne will arrive on all major streaming platforms on October 19, 2022
